The Hidden Seasons of Barbados

Since the 1970s there has been a steady decline of coral reefs on the south coast of Barbados. Coral reefs are one of the most enticing reasons to visit the former British colony, with the two most prevalent types of coral being Elkhorn and Staghorn Coral. These ocean dwellers provide an important barrier against the worst ravages of storms by absorbing an average of 70% of wave energy coming to the shore. Evidence from the Coastal Zone Management Unit suggest that most beaches on the south coast of the island are eroding at an average rate of 15 m per 100 years. Coupled with rising sea levels it is predicted that in 100 years’ time Paradise Beach- my proposed site- will be completely flooded.
